When an operating system is loaded onto a workstation system, a registry structure is automatically created to register what settings, instructions, data files and other information are there in the PC. As its name implies, it is the roster of data files, instructions, and settings significant to the workstation’s operations system and softwares. Without a registry and the information are spread at arbitrary in the system, the computer will take without end to go over, choose, retrieve and use the necessary information.
Complexity comes later
Using the workstation allows the intermittent entry of updates to file systems, settings and other software necessities from time to time, further complicating the operating course of action. Imagine a tree of interconnecting branches, diverse stems fusing into others, many not ending in leaves but into other stems, then you can have an idea of how convoluted such a registry can be. Moreover, although new updates are loaded into the system, the old files they replaced or superseded are not deleted nor filed in other places. These obsolete files stay on, unused yet accessed by the operating system everytime the computer is switched on. In other words, the operating system scans every file, determines if it is appropriate to the operation at hand, retrieves it if it is and discards it if not, and proceeds to the next file, copying the needed file into the memory for use in the operation.
If you open an automatic update information as prompted by the system, you will see that there are many updates that are clearly superseded or replaceable by later updates. But the computer will still download them if you allow it by not being selective. All the updates between your last and the current updating in fact will be loaded with the automatic update process. If it is not already in your system, in it goes.
The after-effect
Eventually a registry loaded with unwanted information is made that the system yet reads each time. This slows down the workstation’s operation considerably, and eventually makes it crash if it gets too conflicting or heavy. A collapse totally halts the operation and may, at the same time, damage the system itself by corrupting bits of information. Too many unreasonable and perhaps contradictory directions and something will fall apart sooner or later.
